I love the fact that this happened.
Here’s the story:
My friend Luke has worked at Beat magazine one or two days a week for the last couple of years doing typesetting and design stuff. His boss Pat has been on tour with his band for the last couple of months, so in Pat’s absence Luke has stepped up to laying out the cover each week and is responsible for sending it off to the printer.
I guess because the cover is glossy colour and the inside pages are newsprint, the cover is printed separately to the rest of the magazine and is to another print facility a few days before everything else.
On Friday, instead of sending a cover featuring The Kaiser Chiefs as planned Luke sent the cover above (illustrated by Ben Hammond inna Real Fake Nude style) to the printer and crossed his fingers that it would avoid detection in pre-press checks before he flew out, relocating to NYC yesterday.
It worked and 35,000 copies were distributed to over 1800 distribution points across Victoria this morning. Amazing.
