A bit over a year ago, I swapped Ben Montero this picture in exchange for some help setting up a website to sell his drawings. He never got around to doing anything with the site, incidentally, but I do have this framed and hanging on my wall.
It is, quite obviously, an homage to “Teachers” from Daft Punk’s Homework (“JAMMIN GERALD! BRIAN WILSON! GEORGE CLINTON!”) as well as a list of his own musical heroes.
One of the things I liked about it right away is that I hadn’t heard of lots of the people on there. In addition to Bowie and Fleetwod Mac and people you’ll obviously know, there’s some forgotten or otherwise obscure inclusions like The Cyrkle and the Far East Family band, a couple of members of West Coast sunshine pop groups gone solo and other surprises.
In an effort to bring myself up-to-speed, I went through the picture left-to-right and assembled a Spotify playlist containing the first song listed for each of the artists I didn’t know.
And the funny thing is… it turned out to be a really, really great mix!
I played this relentlessly last summer.
It’s one hour and ten minutes long and takes in Japanese stoner synth jams, 60s pop, 70s pop, surf guitar rock, doo wop, girl group RNB… and dollops more of the above.
Even the sequencing seemed to just work, left-to-right.
